it is well.

The day after Christmas I got up early. I used to grasp the art of sleeping in, but sometime in the past decade that skill has up and left the premises.

I moved with sleepy stealth through my morning routine: water in the hotpot, coffee grounds, french press. Walk from the kitchen to close the bedroom door where my oldest two boys share a bunk, their limbs all long and teenagery in a tangle of sheets.

And on that particular morning as I glimpsed their slumbering frames in the almost-light, it struck me: this’d been the last Christmas in who knows how long where our family gets to be All of Us Together.

We’ve had a good year. A year of being chiseled and filled and sobered and pushed back out there to do it all again. And from the piddly hill on which I stand, 2016 looks to be populated with more firsts and lasts, and it’s going to make piecemeal of my heart, but it’s okay. It is well with me.

grander earth has quaked before
moved by the sound of His voice
the seas that are shaken and stirred
can be calmed and broken for my regard
through it all, through it all
my eyes are on you
through it all, through it all
it is well
through it all, through it all
my eyes are on you, and it is well
with me

PS We made a video for you. Because of all the awesome folks on this planet, y’all are the kindest and best.
